Cardiff had manager David Jones sent from the dugout
but their impressive away form continued after they
secured a point in a battling 1-1 draw with Barnsley
at Oakwell.
Jones was sent from the dugout on the stroke of
half-time having remonstrated with referee Phil Dowd
after the Bluebirds were denied a penalty.
Barnsley midfielder Brian Howard appeared to clip
the heels of winger Joe Ledley inside the penalty
area but Dowd waved away the appeals of the Cardiff
players.
Jones argued with the fourth official and was sent
to the stands following a heated discussion with
Dowd.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had broken the deadlock for
the visitors 73rd minute.
Hasselbaink had the visitors first attempt on goal
in the third minute. Robbie Fowler laid the ball
into the path of his strike partner but Hasselbaink
snatched at his shot from distance and the ball flew
high over the crossbar.
Cardiff continued to press in the early stages and
had a good chance when Barnsley defender Robert
Kozluk fouled Hasselbaink in a dangerous position in
the sixth minute.
Fowler stepped up to take the resulting free-kick
from the edge of the penalty area and curled his
shot round the wall and towards the top-left corner
forcing Tykes goalkeeper Heinz Muller to make a
smart save.
After a sluggish start Barnsley finally came to life
and forced four consecutive corners midway through
the half.
Defender Stephen Foster almost broke the deadlock in
the 24th minute.
A dangerous inswinging corner from on-loan Everton
midfielder Anderson De Silva was met by the head of
Foster but Cardiff defender Kevin McNaughton managed
to clear his downward header off the line.
Fowler found himself in space in the 31st minute on
the left of the area. But the former Liverpool
striker scuffed his shot and Muller made a simple
save.
Fowler missed another good chance to open the
scoring in the 55th minute.
Joe Ledley broke down the left and picked out Fowler
on the edge of the box but his volley whistled past
the post.
Hasselbaink, always lively in possession, had
another chance in the 63rd minute. The Dutch forward
found space on the edge of the box but screwed his
shot wide of the post.
Apart from the two goals, both sides struggled to
create any clear-cut chances in the second period
with only Kayode Odejayi’s shot glancing the
woodwork.
Former Barnsley midfielder Stephen McPhail delivered
a dangerous cross from the right and picked out
Hasselbaink.
The veteran Dutch striker outmuscled two Barnsley
defenders and directed a powerful header into the
bottom-right corner and past the despairing dive of
goalkeeper Heinz Muller.
The Tykes equalised in the 84th minute through
Howard.
A dangerous cross from right by substitute Mark
Devaney was met by the head of Howard and the ball
flew into the top-left corner.
Cardiff came closest to securing the points in the
dying stages as Paul Parry screwed his shot wide
when well placed. |
